Psychotherapy and Counseling for Children and Adolescents
For younger children, Dr. Concepción meets with the parent(s) initially in order to gather as much information as possible as it relates to the behavioral issues, family history, and the routine in the home. Dr. Concepción works in conjunction with clients, parents, and pediatricians to determine whether a diagnosis is warranted and how best to help the child. Dr. Concepción begins with behavioral treatment first but will make recommendations for a psychopharmacological consult if necessary and also works closely with parents to provide the tools needed to improve parenting skills and address dysfunctional patterns.
Dr. Concepción also has extensive experience in working with adolescents and their families. The most important piece in a therapeutic relationship is to build a strong rapport with the adolescent, establish their trust and model healthy communication skills. Often, the adolescent is struggling with developmental issues, anxiety, feelings of sadness, and problems with peer relationships. The adolescent and young adult’s cognitions are challenged and new perspectives are offered to address situations in a more positive and productive manner.
